What is a good guide for a dialysis diet?
A friend of mine is on dialysis. They have put her on a special diet, but alot of the paperwork contradicts itself. How much sodium, potassium, etc. should be allowed? What foods should be oof-limits and what foods can she eat w/o restrictions, if any. Are there any good recipes that still taste great? What about foods that are already made? How can she dine out and not hit over her limit? She's not diabetic so she doesn't have the same restrictions. We already know that she can only have 5 cups of fluids per day, but what else? Please be as specific as possible!
While there are some general similarities in diets for those who are on dialysis such as restrictions on fluid, electrolytes and increased protein, the specific diets are individualized. If you have questions or are finding contradictions you should take those issues up with the registered dietitian who has formulated the diet. If you continue to be unhappy I recommend you find another registered dietitian. You can ask at your dialysis center, your doctor or the National Kidney Foundation at the website below.
