What is the best way to strip gloss paint from a door?
I'm in the process of re-painting my front door and i was going to simply paint over the existing gloss paint after giving it a quick sand down. I'm doing this to one side of the door but noticed on the other that there were a number of paint runs, some cracks and various other imperfections that would require a lot of sanding so i started to strip the paint using a hot air gun. There appears to be only one or two layers of gloss on there and stripping with a hot air gun is proving very difficult, especially around the 6 decorative panels as i can't get into the detail with my shave hook without ruining the wood. Any tips? I don't want to take the door off and have it dipped as i've just had it re-hung and started painting on one side of the door already.
Use a combination shave hook with your hot air gun to take the bulk of the paint off. make smooth afterwards with sanding. Knot (apply knotting to woodknots), prime, undercoat, gloss.
